Free online credit note maker
A credit note, also called a credit memo, reduces what a customer owes on an invoice you already sent: for returned goods, an overcharge, a discount agreed after billing or a cancelled job. Add the original invoice number, the reason and what is being credited, and the total credit adds up as you type. Download it as PDF, Word or Excel and send it to your customer.
Step 1
Link the invoice
Enter the customer, the number and date of the invoice you are crediting, and the reason.
Step 2
List what is credited
One line per returned item, overcharge or cancelled service, with quantity and price. Tax is credited the same way.
Step 3
Send it
Say whether you are refunding the money or taking it off the next invoice, then download and send the credit note.

Questions
What is a credit note?
A credit note is a document a seller issues to reduce or cancel the amount a customer owes on an invoice. It is used for returns, overcharges, damaged goods, discounts agreed after billing and cancelled work. It refers to the original invoice so both sides can match them.
Is a credit memo the same as a credit note?
Yes. Credit memo (credit memorandum) is the name more common in the US; credit note is used in the UK, Canada, Australia and most other countries. Both reduce what the customer owes on an invoice.
Should I edit the original invoice instead?
No. Once an invoice is sent, keep it as it is and issue a credit note for the change. That keeps your records and tax figures correct, and gives the customer a clear paper trail.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every template, every download format and every feature in the builder is free. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many documents you make.
Where is my information saved?
Only in your own browser on this device. We never upload your business details, customers or prices. Download a copy of anything you need to keep.
Can I open it in Word or Google Docs?
Yes. Download the Word file and open it in Microsoft Word, or upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs. The Excel file keeps live formulas for the totals.
