What should a carpentry estimate include?
A carpentry estimate is a written price for woodwork such as framing, trim, decks, stairs, cabinets or built-ins, listing the labor hours, lumber and materials, and any deposit before work starts. A carpentry estimate should include your business name, contact details and license number; the customer and the job address; each piece of work with hours and rate, or a price per foot; lumber, sheet goods and trim with species, size and quantity; finish, hardware and who handles paint or stain; and deposit, how long the price is valid and a signature line. Baseboard, casing and crown are easy to compare per foot. Track your real install speed to set the rate. Send it before the job starts, keep a copy, and convert it into an invoice once the customer approves and the work is done.
Also called: carpentry quote, carpenter estimate, woodwork estimate, finish carpentry estimate. It is the same document, and this template works for all of them.

Markup calculator
Enter your cost and markup to get the selling price, your profit and the margin it works out to.
- Selling price
- $500.00
- Profit
- $100.00
- Gross margin
- 20.0%
Markup is profit as a share of cost. Margin is profit as a share of the price, so it is always the smaller number.
Put it on an estimate →How to write a carpentry estimate
- 1
Measure and list each piece of work
Write each job on its own line (bookcase, crown, baseboard, deck boards) so the customer can approve or drop items.
- 2
Estimate hours per task
Price labor by the hour for custom work, or by the linear foot for trim and the square foot for decks and flooring.
- 3
Price lumber and materials separately
List wood species, sizes and quantities with your cost plus markup. Lumber prices move, so say how long the price holds.
- 4
Ask for a materials deposit
Hardwood and custom orders cost real money upfront. A deposit covers them before you buy.
- 5
Say what is and isn't included
Note finish level, who paints or stains, and whether removal and disposal of old trim are included.

Pricing tips for carpenters
Work out your prices with the markup calculator, labor cost calculator and hourly rate calculator.
Price trim by the linear foot
Baseboard, casing and crown are easy to compare per foot. Track your real install speed to set the rate.
Charge custom work by the hour
Built-ins and furniture vary too much for flat rates. Estimate hours per stage: design, cut, assemble, install, finish.
Mark up materials
Picking, hauling and storing lumber takes time. A markup on materials covers it and the waste from defects.
Questions carpenters ask
How do carpenters charge for their work?
Most carpenters charge by the hour for custom and repair work, by the linear foot for trim and moulding, and by the square foot for decks and flooring. Materials are added at cost plus a markup.
What is the difference between a carpentry estimate and a quote?
An estimate is your best price and can change if the job changes, for example if you find rot behind old trim. A quote is a fixed price for a clearly defined job. Use an estimate when there may be surprises.
Should I include lumber in the estimate?
Yes. List lumber and materials in their own table with quantities, so the customer sees what goes into the job. If prices are volatile, keep the estimate valid for a shorter time.
How much deposit should a carpenter ask for?
Enough to cover the materials you have to buy before you start, often 25% to 50% on custom work. Check any limits on deposits where you work.
Is this template really free?
Yes. Fill it in online and download PDF, Word or Excel as often as you like. There is no sign-up, no watermark and nothing to install. Your details stay in your own browser.
