How to write an electrical estimate

  1. 1

Describe the scope in plain words

Name each task the way the customer would: "add two kitchen circuits", not just a code reference.

  2. 2

    Estimate labor by task

Give each task its own hours so the customer can see the panel upgrade apart from the fixtures.

  3. 3

    List materials with quantities

Panel, breakers, wire by the foot, boxes, devices and fixtures each get a line.

  4. 4

    Include permit and inspection

Show permit and inspection fees on their own line and say who schedules the inspection.

  5. 5

    State what is excluded

Drywall repair, painting and utility fees are common exclusions. Put them in the notes.

What to include on a electrical estimate

  • Your electrical contractor license number
  • Each task with hours and rate
  • Panel, breakers, wire, devices and fixtures with quantities
  • Permit, inspection and any utility coordination
  • Exclusions such as drywall patching or painting
  • Deposit, warranty and how long the price is valid

Pricing tips for electricians

Use flat rates for common jobs

Outlets, switches and fixture swaps are easier to sell at a fixed price per device. Use hours for open-ended work.

Watch copper prices

Wire prices move with copper. Keep the validity period short on big rewiring jobs and price at today's supplier cost.

Charge for the trip and diagnosis

Add a service call line for troubleshooting so a no-fix visit is still paid.

Questions electricians ask

Do I need to put my license number on an electrical estimate?

Many states and cities require licensed electricians to show their license number on estimates, contracts and ads. Check your local rules; the template has a field for it.

Should permit fees be on the estimate?

Yes. Put permit and inspection fees on their own line so the customer knows the work will be inspected and what it costs.

Can I turn the estimate into an invoice when the job passes inspection?

Yes. Open the estimate and tap Convert to invoice. All lines carry over and the deposit already paid is shown against the balance.

Is this template really free?

Yes. Fill it in online and download PDF, Word or Excel as often as you like. There is no sign-up, no watermark and nothing to install. Your details stay in your own browser.
