How to write a handyman invoice

  1. 1

    List every task

Write each job on its own line in plain words, so the customer sees what got done.

  2. 2

    Bill time per task

Show the hours for each task at your hourly rate, or a flat price for jobs you do often.

  3. 3

    Add materials you bought

Include hardware, mounts and supplies with what you paid for them plus any markup.

  4. 4

Note your minimum and trip charge

If you have a minimum visit or trip fee, put it on the invoice so it is clear next time.

  5. 5

    Get paid before you leave

List the payment methods you take and send the invoice by text.

Pricing tips for handymen

Set a minimum

A one or two hour minimum per visit makes small jobs worth the drive.

Flat-rate the regulars

TV mounting, fixture swaps and furniture assembly sell better at a set price than by the hour.

Check your license limits

Some states cap the size of job you can take without a contractor license. Keep your invoices within the rules where you work.

Questions handymen ask

Should a handyman charge by the hour or by the job?

Both work. Hourly suits mixed lists of small tasks. Flat prices suit common jobs you can time well, and customers like knowing the price upfront.

Can I add the materials I bought?

Yes. Add them in the materials table with quantity and price. The totals and tax update automatically.

Can I save my business details for next time?

Yes. Your business details stay saved in your browser, so the next invoice starts with them filled in.

Is this template really free?

Yes. Fill it in online and download PDF, Word or Excel as often as you like. There is no sign-up, no watermark and nothing to install. Your details stay in your own browser.
